Vedder River Boxing Day Derby
This is a note from Lew to his son that sums today up.....I hope this day finds you well and able...yup...have a great tear.....Gus..........
Ken....took Gary up to see what was going on at the Derby. River in good shape for now, temp. about -2 degrees. Got there about 12:30 and only 4 small fish weighed in, largest about 7lb 6 oz. Fish were small and skinny. Hardly anyone around, just not the same Derby atmosphere.
As we were leaving, a guy was packing one in that I think won the derby at about 11 lbs. Only 6 fish weighed in, a pretty poor show.
With the rain we are going to have and all the snow, I don't know how the river will hold up for next week.
See you tomorrow. Dad...
yup ........and there were 161 enteries....not bad for a whack of weather like this....The Steelhead Derby in the last decade has produced small numbers of fish entered and lots of entrants...usually in the 350 area....yup it is still very popular regardless of the lack of appearance.....the hatchery program since 1986 seemed to have moved the fishes entrance to the river up about a month....It is traditional to have it on boxing day and regardless the numbers of fish caught it is a very prestigious event to win.....it was about -6 to -2 degrees on the river today....it has warmed up a bit... a good thing because the ice is a bummer when it is real cold.....it amazes me any fish bites when the water is so cold...hmm maybe the amount caught was really good considering the water temperature....
The Derby is so lacking in atmosphere...it is almost depressing....the clubhouse has been neglected...it doesnt even smell right.....as you can tell by the fish board presentation.....not much glitz...ya..... maybe im just in the good old daze too much.......I painted that sign in 1966 while working for Chuck Earl....wow.... could it have been so long ago.......but we are still good lookin huh.....

school friend
On Friday I had the pleasure of a visit from a fellow student that went through grades 7 to 12 with me...
Alan Ernest ...or Allan Head as we knew him......he had cause to visit Chilliwack for a few days...He phoned me from the famous Airport Cafe and I went over and we visited for a few hours.....Hey Al ...when you see this you will remember I snapped a photo when we met in the Cafe.....Alan is all bundled up as the weather is a heck of a lot colder than his home ground in Fort Lauderdale, Florida......yup...that was a great visit and he got to meet some of the Flat Earth Society members.....

coming or going
Clik to enlarge
Senior member in good standing Big Jim is paying the coffee bill today...that is a good thing in the Flat Earth Society because it means he won the hidden number pool today....as you can see he is overcome with emotion and does not know if he is coming or going......Jim showed a profit of 1.20 after expenses ....not a great win but nevertheless a good win....Jim will store those funds handy in his vault , probably towards gas for his next trip of many .......driving medical patients to facilities in Vancouver 3 or 4 times a week.......yup he does that......Jim and his wife are some of the good guys in this world......A faller logger by trade, Jim retired about 20 years ago after the last tree on the Sahara Desert was cut down.
