this was going to be a howler
Growing up in Chilliwack.......1950
My Uncle Charlie and Aunt Eva lived on Portage Avenue....they had a VLA home (veterans Land Act) it was in the first subdivision built in Chilliwack.....He worked at Buckerfields....Charlie had been overseas in the war and New houses were offered to war vets at a really good interest rate and low down payment.
My 2 cousins Cathy and Linda were toddlers...six months previous to our visit there one evening ,Uncle Charlie had misplaced a very expensive ring. A ring he acquired in Germany when he was overseas. He was devastated about the ring ...I can remember him mourning his 500 dollar loss and writing it off to the kids flushing it down the toilet or some horrible fate like that...they were all talking and visiting in the front room and for some reason I was looking down the hot air grate...they had hardwood floors and the air duct was covered with a matched crisscross hardwood grate plate..I have no idea why I was peering through the holes..anyway..guess what...I spot a black topped ring with a diamond in it.........its barley showing down in the dusty pipe..wow...I knew about the ring...I said that.....I paused.. ...I knew this was going to be a howler......they were all busy talking ...but it went dead quiet when I said...Uncle Charlie....there's your ring....WHAT....he quickly came over and pulled the grate out...reached in and grabbed the ring.....YAHOO...wow was he one happy camper....he picked me up ..waved me around a little then set me down...he was babbling excited like all the while....from his wallet he pulled a five dollar bill...wow a five dollar bill...I reached for the fortune at the same time mum said... no no Charlie ....he doesn't expect to be paid for finding it...that's all I could hear...he doesn't expect to be paid...(oh ya paid would be good...I like paid.....It has a nice ring to it...it's my favorite thing.....so they argued back and forth but good old Uncle Charlie won....I got the five bucks ..all mine....and Uncle Charlie was the happiest guy ..he had a great celebration that evening.....
